Best Local Restaurant in Yorkshire & the North East 2025

Long Friday

‘A sense of belonging

‘I'd consider moving house if it meant having this place as my local,’ wrote our inspector after having one of their most enjoyable meals of the year at Anna Hedworth’s intimate and adventurous Jesmond restaurant. An outstanding menu of regional, seasonal small plates plays out like a build-your-own-banquet (don’t miss the beer-battered sage leaves) while never losing sight of serving the community. Regulars wrote in to say it ‘feels like home’, which is exactly what Anna set out to do since throwing open the doors in October 2021. There’s every reason for Newcastle to be proud of their standout regional winner.

Celebrating the win, Anna Hedworth said:
‘Me and the whole team are over the moon to win this award. We have worked so hard to create a really wonderful restaurant, a valuable addition to our city and local neighbourhood, that we are all very proud of. I think our food, wine and service just keeps getting better and better, so this is such rewarding recognition, especially in light of the other amazing winners.’

While Horsforth locals are still counting their lucky stars to have last year’s overall winner, Bavette, on their doorstep, there are nine more Yorkshire gems on this year’s list. New and notable is the Nettle in Settle, serving a lemon pie in the running for ‘best desert ever’, and Norman’s Neighbourhood Kitchen set up by two Shibden Mill Inn alumni in a former car showroom outside Huddersfield. Over in York, Skosh sailed in with the popular vote and is joined by the new Black Wheat Club – as approachable as it is delicious. In Durham, Isla’s all-day charm earned its place on the list while North proved the star of Sunderland.
