Birmingham curry houses have existed since at least 1945, when Abdul Aziz, one of the first Bangladeshi immigrants to settle in the city, began serving curry and rice to policemen, lawyers, and barristers from a café on Steelhouse Lane.

Through the archives: Alastair Little, 1950-2022
Described as ‘one of the young tigers who are re-defining British cooking’ by the 1989 edition of The Good Food Guide, Alastair Little, who died last week, defined a generation of chefs. His Soho restaurant, simply called Alastair Little, opened in 1985 and ran for 17 years, and was seen as ‘a beacon of innovation’. We look back at his time there.

Through the archives: Nick Nairn at Braeval Old Mill
Nick Nairn was one of the first chefs to turn himself into a ‘celebrity’, and did so via the BBC’s then wildly popular show Ready Steady Cook. But Nairn was a star in the kitchen as well as on the screen. He opened his first restaurant, Braeval Old Mill, near Aberfoyle in 1986, and went on to open the acclaimed Nairn's in Glasgow in ‘98. Not bad for a chef who lacked formal training... and once described himself as ‘a self-taught cook who couldn’t boil an egg ten years ago’.
