La Terra

Somerset, Bath - Italian - Restaurant - ££

The best of Italy, with a modern twist

Overall Rating: Very Good

Uniqueness:Does the establishment stand out in the context of the local area? Good

Deliciousness:How delicious is the food? Good

Warmth:How warm is the service and the hospitality in general? Very Good

Strength of recommendation:How enthusiastically and widely would you recommend the establishment? Very Good

It opened in 2021 but La Terra has the feel of a long-established Italian restaurant, with faithful regulars welcomed as friends and cooking rooted in chef Alessandro Scola's family traditions. He and business partner Vito Scaduto (front of house) worked in some of the locality’s more renowned establishments before teaming up for this project – and it runs like a well-oiled machine, from the on-point service to the thrum of the open kitchen at the back. The interior is light and airy, the pale walls and cool grey of the marble-topped tables warmed by vintage wall lights and red padded seating. Scola's cooking combines traditional Italian recipes and ingredients with contemporary creative flair. A starter of lamb shoulder croquettes with kumquats and jus lacked crunch but was meaty, full-flavoured and satisfying, while exceptionally good burrata (from Puglia) was fittingly paired with sweet pear, bitter chicory and crunchy, buttery pine nuts. Sourcing is impeccable: a pearly piece of Brixham plaice, cooked just-so and served with fregola, salty-garlicky bagna cauda and earthy Jerusalem artichoke purée was a high point of our visit, while a plate of traditional Roman gnocchi was equally delightful – made with semolina, pan-fried until burnished and served with crispy fried guanciale, sprightly wild mushrooms, butternut squash and unctuous pan juices.

To conclude, an Amalfi lemon posset with curd and burnt white chocolate offered a novel spin on a classic recipe. Wash it all down with well-sourced, mostly Italian wines, including a decent selection by the glass.

Wonderful Italian food, like being in a small Tuscan trattoria.

It’s discretely located in the centre of town and invariably gives outstanding service, great and authentic food all served in a relaxed modern environment. Vito’s wine advice is also superb and you will not only get a great bottle, you won’t pay the earth for it. That’s why it’s my “go to” whenever friends visit. It’s brilliant!

We went to Bath for a romantic break, we ended up walking by this amazing Italian restaurant, as Italians ourselves we decided to book a table, everything was stunning from the welcome to the last sip of wine! The food made us travel back to Italy from the first bite! Quality, freshness, elegance and originality, top notch!

I had an absolutely wonderful experience at La Terra. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere felt warm and inviting, with a perfect balance of elegance and comfort. The staff was attentive, friendly, and genuinely passionate about making sure everything was just right. The food was outstanding. Every dish tasted fresh, authentic, and beautifully prepared. The pasta was perfectly cooked, with rich, flavorful sauces that felt like they came straight from a traditional Italian kitchen. The ingredients were clearly high quality, and you could taste the care in every bite. Even the simplest dishes had incredible depth of flavor. What really stood out was the attention to detail—from the presentation of the plates to the timing of each course. Nothing felt rushed, and the entire meal was an experience to enjoy. The dessert was the perfect ending, indulgent without being too heavy. This is the kind of place you go when you want a true Italian dining experience, whether it’s for a special occasion or just a great night out. I will definitely be coming back and highly recommend it to anyone who loves authentic, delicious Italian cuisine.

My husband started with the lamb croquette and I had the White onion soup with chestnuts and toasted tuscan bread-both were beautifully presented and delicious. For main course we had the porchetta with cavolo nero, red cabbage purée and jus and the gnocchi alla Romana-with butternut squash, guanciale, wild mushroom and porcini sauce, both were excellent. We were too full for puddings or cheese!
