London’s restaurant scene never stands still. New openings and must-book tables fight for our attention every week. But amid all the hubbub, it's good to know that the old guard isn’t going anywhere…
The Quality Chop House, which first flung open its doors in 1869, continues to serve up hearty British cooking in its Victorian surroundings, while Bentley’s (dating back to 1916) remains a Mayfair stalwart for oysters and seafood. Simpson’s in the Strand has been keeping the romance of traditional roasts alive since 1848, while Soho’s The French House (1891) still thrills with its bohemian character and gutsy Gallic cooking. And of course, there’s The Ritz (1906), proving that old-school glamour never goes out of fashion.
These places aren’t coasting on nostalgia. They deliver on food, service and atmosphere, and they remind us that in a city obsessed with what’s next, the tried and tested still has plenty to offer. See our full list here, because classics are classics for a reason.
