The Marble Arch
Greater Manchester, Manchester - British - Pub - ££
Classic working-class pub with excellent beer and top grub
A short walk from the Northern Quarter, this traditional old boozer teeters on the fringes of yet more city development sites. Hemmed in by anodyne new buildings, the survival of the Grade II-listed corner pub seems not just a small miracle but a two-fingered riposte to the bland new-century surrounds. Thankfully, the Marble Arch remains a beacon of real ale, good food and atmospheric design in an identikit modern age. The original home of Marble Beer and built in 1888, it’s a little marvel of green leather seating, ornate tiles and sloping mosaic floors with an eye-catching barrel ceiling. Outside, there’s a small beer-garden oasis with sheltered cabin seating (blankets provided). The bar serves Marble beers alongside guests and some impressive artisan ciders. The food is straightforward and unpretentious, but with a modern twist (excellent fish and chips, a Korean chicken burger, steak pie, prawn pil-pil and sticky toffee pudding) – something for everyone, in fact. ...

Sunday roasts are hugely popular, with sides including a jug of gravy. Service is exceptionally friendly, and you can bring your dog.
