The Dove Inn
Kent, Dargate - Modern British - Pub
Last seen in the Guide in 2014, not much has changed at this sturdy country pub. Winter visitors are still welcomed by a roaring fire in the cosy front dining room (do specify a table here when booking or you will end up in the soulless side room), while in warmer weather the garden (and outdoor kitchen) is a big-enough draw to merit an overflow car park. Reporters have praised the satisfying cooking, in particular plump Shetland mussels in a cider and mustard broth, and slow-cooked ox cheek served with clotted–cream potatoes. Wash it all down with Shepherd Neame beers or something from the globe-trotting wine list, which opens at a friendly £24 and offers good by-the-glass choice.
