In a 'lovely location' between Sheffield and Chesterfield, this handsome, family-run village hostelry with rooms stands out for its 'great food, beer, service and laid-back atmosphere'. You can eat and drink casually in the bar, while the Stag restaurant offers pub favourites as well as daily specials. Our crisp-edged mini lamb shish with tomato salad and the creamiest tzatziki on charred flatbread was excellent, likewise a generous serving of pan-seared silver mullet with crab-crushed new potatoes, baby vegetables and chive beurre blanc. Desserts are pure comfort too, if a cornflake tart with pink custard is anything to go by. There's a short but varied wine list, too.
