Soulshine

Dorset, Bridport - Modern European - Cafe & Restaurant - ££

A lovable bohemian local

Overall Rating: Good

Uniqueness:Does the establishment stand out in the context of the local area? Good

Deliciousness:How delicious is the food? Good

Warmth:How warm is the service and the hospitality in general? Very Good

Strength of recommendation:How enthusiastically and widely would you recommend the establishment? Good

At first glance, Soulshine is a humble café – a cluster of bar stools fronting a silver espresso machine, with a selection of cakes placed on the bar. Follow a corridor, however, and you enter a semi-secret dining room – a bohemian space with a profusion of potted plants, where artworks, chairs and cushions come in bright primary colours, and locals drop by to plunder a similarly colourful small-plates menu four evenings a week. By and large, the kitchen lets the ingredients speak for themselves: Baron Bigod brie with salted walnuts and a drizzle of Devon honey makes for a moreish opening act, swiftly succeeded by the more complex flavours of Dorset venison, pork and sloe salami, served alongside cornichons. There’s also plenty of imagination at play in tightly choreographed medleys such as peach with whipped ricotta, pickled onion and almonds or beetroot with barley, black garlic and hazelnuts – though a standout when we visited was the umami punch of t...

Puddings include simple, satisfying offerings such as a dark chocolate pot with cherries, or perhaps affogato with locally roasted Goose & Badger coffee. Also look out for set-menu supper clubs, as well as winning breakfasts featuring the likes of shakshuka and locally foraged mushrooms. As for drinks, an extremely succinct but eclectic wine list has bottles from £27.

We are so lucky to have this restaurant in our town. We have eaten lunches from the small plates menu, we especially enjoyed the brie and walnuts, we've also thoroughly enjoyed the New Year supper club - don't you all be booking it up before me! We've eaten at a fabulous supper club collab with High Grange where the cooking was over fire and eaten from their delicious dinner menu. We go for a simple coffee break. If you enjoy fresh food, inventive, seasonal menus, good knowledgeable service at a reasonable price there's nothing better.

The restaurant is always busy, and the food is to die for. My wife is a vegetarian, and they always cook amazing choices for her. They have a supper club, and she has, in the past, been the only vegetarian and they compile a menu just for her. We have taken many people to Soulshine, and they all think the food and venue are amazing.

Amazing food in an original menu. Great tastes and exquisite offerings in a friendly atmosphere. This is one of my favourite restaurants. It has a unique offering that is hard to equal.
