It may seem surprising, but the undying British love affair with Italian food has not always been a matter of one-way traffic. When the Dammone family relocated to sun-soaked Leeds during the drought year of 1976, they were initiating a long-lived culinary dynasty that continues to this day. Changing design trends have seen the place morph into a spacious modern venue, with varnished floors, bare tables and exposed brick, but the family ethos remains undimmed. As does the carefully wrought traditional cooking, which is full of upstanding flavours and the refreshing simplicity of approach that everybody loves. Traditional antipasti feature the likes of panelle (Sicilian pea fritters) with red pepper and chilli salsa, while the comprehensive range of pasta options takes in generously adorned seafood bucatini. A main course of Gressingham duck leg with balsamic cherries and cavolo nero in red wine jus is an appealing balance of sharp edges and soft textures, not least from its dollop of herbed mash. Pizza variations will inspire, and you can't go much more native than finishing with chocolate and almond caprese cake with amaretti crumb, amaretto-laced chocolate sauce and stracciatella ice cream. The all-Italian wine list has an excellent glass selection, but leave room for a final Frangelico.
