Pip’s

Norfolk, Norwich - International - Restaurant - ££

World-hopping flavours and Latino vibes

Overall Rating: Good

Uniqueness:Does the establishment stand out in the context of the local area? Very Good

Deliciousness:How delicious is the food? Good

Warmth:How warm is the service and the hospitality in general? Very Good

Strength of recommendation:How enthusiastically and widely would you recommend the establishment? Good

With deliciously lazy Afro-Cuban beats on the turntable plus tequilas and Cuban rums in evidence behind the bar, there was a distinct Latino vibe to this diminutive weekend-only spot when we crammed in early one Saturday evening. At the back is a minuscule kitchen where Steve Bishop-Laggett methodically prepares a short, world-hopping, monthly changing menu. Meat takes a leading role (‘we like offal’ states the website) – a fact emphasised by the stuffed animals (foxes, deer and various horned beings) displayed on the wood-panelled walls. Best come as a couple (or a maximum of four) to balance out a meal of, say, a thick slice of beef tongue accompanied by tender chunks of lamb neck, herby green chorizo, and ‘cowboy’ beans in a very rich bone-marrow sauce, refreshingly countered by shrimp ceviche tostada with shredded cabbage, salad, cocktail sauce and radish. It’s uncompromising, but that brings a confidence and originality that wins you over and I’ve never been anywhere quite like it. The menu is small, always changing, which is in keeping with the passion of its owners but also can’t help but inspire repeat visits. In a culture of sameness and cliches, from bland brunches to endless scrolling on streaming services, there’s something so refreshing about Pip’s, and even contrary, as its branding and decor also evokes. It’s telling that the gritty cult movie VHS collection is displayed pride and place in its coffee shop section, in keeping with its owners’ tastes and passions. In a nutshell, Pip’s stands out in Norwich’s already blooming food scene and is an experience you’ll only get inside the restaurant itself.

Every time I go Pip’s I am blown away by the originality of the meals. The intimate dining atmosphere is brilliant and I have experienced flavours I have never experienced before. Pip's uses simple natural ingredients and the chef always does something amazing with them. I had cows tongue and liver and it’s elevated by what the chef does. Pip's is a true gem of a restaurant!

Eclectic, inventive, delicious. The menu is always surprising and their commitment to only using local ingredients is admirable. The atmosphere is cosy and relaxed, quite unlike anywhere else that I've eaten.

Creative menus, from really ambitious to elevated comfort food, served in such a small, welcoming and truly local establishment. Eating there is a treat, the owners know everyone which is a testament to the repeat custom they deserve, and have made an effort to squeeze us in early doors a few times to accommodate our silly decision to have a baby. Having spent much of the last ten years in London and loving the quality and quantity of options, having Pip's round the corner is a godsend.

Pip's offers exquisite dining experiences from creative and honed monthly menus using locally sourced and forraged ingredients, whilst still maintaining a down to earth and welcoming experience run by a fantastic mom and pop duo in Helen and Steve. They also run events championing collaboration with local talented chefs, and are passionate about giving back to the community in Norwich. They are a fine establishment and somewhere I am proud to call my favourite restaurant. We love you Pip's!!!

This is not a restaurant, this is a place that feels like a warm hug and a home. The food is impeccable and expressive, made with love, it takes you places. Few restaurants have left such a deep mark (and my partner and I have definitely travelled a lot)

This restaurant has the most ingenious combinations of foods/flavours/ingredients on their menu. I have only been a few times but every single time I do I say “that was the best meal I’ve ever had.” It’s so imaginative and creative, yet also isn’t trying to hard at all and the dishes just are so well executed. I love it!

Honestly have not had better meals elsewhere. The flavours are so well balanced and the dishes cooked to perfection. The staff are so welcoming and friendly and the atmosphere is like just chilling out in your lounge. It is so nice to go somewhere that offers out of the norm options that taste absolutely amazing!! I have yet to have anything that I dislike.

Pip’s is an incredible dining experience. I’d read about it and as soon as I moved back to Norwich, it was my first stop. The food is inventive, interesting and delicious. The flavours are rich and bold. It’s a tiny restaurant run by an incredibly dedicated, small team. The welcome and warmth from them is incredible, I’ve never experienced a place like it. It’s a real gem in Norwich and some of the best food I’ve ever had in my life.

Extremely well timed and attentive service from a wicked team, with a commitment to sourcing ingredients sustainably and exploring exciting combinations of flavours. Pips boasts a broad range across menus and remains high in demand despite lacking the seating capacity some of Norwich's other popular food hotspots have - Food at Pip's could very well stand up to restaurants in London that carry a Michelin Star.
