Lothians, Edinburgh - Scottish / Irish - Restaurant & Café - ££

Overall Rating: Good

Warmth:How warm is the service and the hospitality in general? Very Good

Strength of recommendation:How enthusiastically and widely would you recommend the establishment? Good

Claire Hanrahan, who’s done stints at the Palmerston and Ardfern, opened this buzzy, friendly neighbourhood café and bistro overlooking Newhaven harbour in the summer of 2025. Named after her late grandmother, who lived a couple of doors down, it’s become a popular breakfast, brunch and lunch spot with occasional pop-up dinners from guest chefs. The attraction is good, honest cooking with nods to Hanrahan’s Irish heritage in the daily baked soda bread and weekend Guinness cake, but the focus is mainly on Scottish ingredients and seasonal produce. For breakfast, there could be kippers on buttered toast with lemon and dill, while lunch brings the likes of wild garlic gnudi in a rich tomato sauce. You can perch at a yellow Formica counter or queue for one of the handful of wooden tables – the best are by the window, with views over the harbour towards Fife. You can’t book and it’s rammed at weekends, but coffee, croissants and that delicious soda...
