Hou Hou Mei
Highlands & Islands, Inverness - Asian - Restaurant
Set between the Salvation Army and Tesco, this single-storey site might resemble a working men's club from the outside, but it's busy enough on a regular basis to have to turn diners away at the door. Young husband and wife team, JP and Karen Saint, serve a mixed menu of Thai, Japanese, Korean and Chinese dishes ranging from bao buns and house-made dumplings to Hong Kong-style sweet-and-sour classics, while desserts are east/west crossovers such as miso-salted caramel brownies. Our advice? Stay with the small plates and treat yourself to something suitable from the list of Asian-themed cocktails and mocktails.

Overall experience for a family group was exceptional! The menu is interesting and the food delicious. It’s totally unpretentious and relaxed. I loved the sesame cauliflower and chicken satay skewers and Asian greens.

There are less than 250,000 people living in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, which covers an area larger than Belgium! So when a new and original restaurant opens in Inverness, it is a special occasion. This is particularly true of Hou Hou Mei, where the modern Asian menu is delivered to such a high standard in relaxed and unpretentious surroundings.
