In early summer, the shelves at this appealing farm shop just off the A12 are laden with early Ardleigh strawberries, bunches of local asparagus, and freshly dug new potatoes. Shopping done, head next door to the airy café-restaurant with its suntrap courtyard. Victoria sponges and apple-crumble cakes are among the daily temptations displayed under glass cloches, while breakfast brings the full works, Pinney's kippers, eggs every which way, etc. Light lunch options range from ploughman’s to generous salads and sandwiches, but if you're really hungry, lamb kofta with flatbread, tzatziki and pickled red cabbage might fit the bill. Otherwise, book for a Sunday lunch that revolves around beef or lamb from the farm with all the trimmings.
