Corner Shop

Pavement tables on the traffic-free street are popular on sunny days at this hybrid wine bar/restaurant on the corner of Old Dumbarton Road and Lumsden Street in the increasingly vibrant Yorkhill area. Inside, light wood, diffused lighting and plenty of greenery keep it airy and spacious, while seating is spread between booths, small tables for two and half-a-dozen counter stools.  Inspired by, though not slavishly rooted in the flavours of Northern Spain and Southern France, the Corner Shop is Conor McGeady’s first venture as co-owner – although he has a good pedigree (Fallachan, Brett, Gannet). There’s an excellent-value (but limited) set lunch, plus a more extensive sharing-plates menu from late afternoon. Do order the tender, full-flavoured pork chop (always on for lunch and dinner), while other memorable offerings range from grilled chorizo toast with Basque cider sauce to tuna crudo with a piquant green herb and olive-oil sauce. Desserts are limited, but it’s hard to see past the superb Basque cheesecake. A lot of thought has also gone into the wine list, which offers mostly Spanish sips that really enhance the dishes.
