The love felt for Chloe’s by its regulars is palpable and contagious. Soon after opening time, the small premises is crammed with 'refugees' from what owner Chloe Horner calls ‘Hague-blue’ (conservative Cotswold tweeness), who relish her sustainably sourced, mostly vegetarian food. Limited opening hours ensure that each sitting becomes an event, with diners and a cheerful band of staff ready to enjoy the evening. Behind the old stone frontage, you'll find an open kitchen by the entrance, a dining room full of mismatched furniture, and peach-coloured walls displaying original artworks. Oxfordshire-grown vegetables are to the fore on the regularly changing menu (individually priced dishes are available separately, although most choose the weekly set option). You might kick off with home-baked bread – delectably moist, thick slices of turmeric and coconut focaccia, perhaps – served with pickles and ‘ferments’. Garlicky kimchi and slices of pickle...

Garlicky kimchi and slices of pickled butternut squash were the top picks on our visit, their acidity partially balanced by a bowl of creamy labneh with chunks of pickled rhubarb. Next, a variety of dips and vegetables, with sparklingly fresh radishes and asparagus guacamole being the standouts. Things can occasionally slip into worthiness; there was a preponderance of al dente pulses in both our main courses (tender organic pork with ’nduja; roast cauliflower with harissa yoghurt). But indulgence returned with the seasonal dessert: flavourful, locally grown strawberries adding zest to a creamy Eton mess.

The choice of wines is limited to glasses of red or white, although Chloe’s also includes a bottle shop selling local drinks, plus three cocktails: a spicy Margarita with chilli and coriander is the sip of choice. Note: Chloe’s often closes during school holidays to accommodate the family lives of staff.
