Chez Fred

Dorset, Bournemouth - Seafood - Restaurant & Takeaway

Three generations of the Capel family have owned and run their homely, simply decorated fish and chip restaurant in a Bournemouth suburb for 35 years – in fact it's considered something of a local institution. The menu features Atlantic cod or haddock, with a ‘catch of the day’ listed on a specials board (perhaps plaice, hake, red gurnard or rock), all sustainably sourced, sparklingly fresh, and fried in a light, airy batter with very good chips. There's a gluten-free day on Tuesdays, and a takeaway section if you find the queue for the dining room too long.

Worth queuing to sample the very best fish and chips supper. Consistent quality from the food (including fish, chips, mushy peas, tartare and curry sauce) to the service. The take away is also great but try the dine in option for the true experience. The only issue is telling people about how good it is and seeing the queue get longer. Enjoy :)

Absolutely first class in every way, really good service, the best fish and chips I've had for years and a really good buzz in a full restaurant on a wet Tuesday lunchtime.

If you go, take ear plugs.

Super fresh fish, cooked to order. Place is always packed & sells out so you know you're never getting yesterday's leftovers. No reservations so you usually have to wait a few minutes for a table but you will get in. Staff are lovely, friendly even when run off their feet.

Always great! Always fresh, always welcoming and warm. We all do like to visit this restaurant, and yet sometimes awards are snooty and look down on fish and chips. But they shouldn’t!
