Wild

Hertfordshire, Berkhamsted - Modern British - Restaurant - ££

Cool, classy addition to the Home Counties scene

Overall Rating: Very Good

Uniqueness:Does the establishment stand out in the context of the local area? Very Good

Strength of recommendation:How enthusiastically and widely would you recommend the establishment? Very Good

Sedate Berkhamsted received an invigorating jolt when Wild opened in 2025. Behind the picture windows, the large interior is light and airy, with blond woods and a beige colour scheme. So far, so Home Counties. But a soundtrack of cool urban beats sets a new tone, as does expert, understated service from a team that includes the former sommelier of Le Gavroche. ‘Ingredients-led’ has become a cliché, but here it has precise meaning. Wild's owners also run an organic regenerative farm near Radlett, so it's no surprise that superlative home-grown produce forms the starting point for a menu of small plates and sharing dishes, including exquisitely crunchy raw turnip accompanied by the restaurant's version of Gentleman’s Relish. Chef-patron Matt Larcombe (formerly at the Crown at Bray) also knows when to enhance his raw materials and is adept at the chargrill. The open kitchen at the back produces beautifully puffy flatbread, filled with luscious strips of tender la...

The open kitchen at the back produces beautifully puffy flatbread, filled with luscious strips of tender lamb and blobs of tart rhubarb emulsion, while a masterly take on lemon meringue pie with miso caramel sees the gooey, sweet meringue scorched to bitterness. Such expert touches accentuate Wild's class.

Wild is exactly what a great local restaurant should be: distinctive, welcoming and quietly exceptional. The room is beautiful, yet relaxed, with knowledgeable service from a team that clearly care. The cooking is thoughtful and flavour-led, with a strong sense of purpose. A charred mackerel full of flavour and freshness, a celeriac dish was a revelation, packing bold, layers of flavours and a mushroom parfait as rich and indulgent as a fine chocolate mousse. Drinks are treated with equal ambition: complex, carefully constructed, and perfectly in tune with the menu. Just a short journey from central London, Wild feels like an escape, a place with real identity, integrity, and staying power. A compelling addition to any list of the country’s best local restaurants.

The service and food are second to none. They make you feel so welcome, as if you’re eating at home with friends. Everything is explain and the fact that the vegetables are grown on their own farm is amazing. They also host special week day events like meet the grower. Best restaurant I have eaten at in a long time.

Local produce from their own farm nearby. Genuine farm to fork dining. Constantly evolving Top tier service and the best wine sommelier around! And the table has its own cutlery draw, what else can you say!

Wild is such a gem in Berko! It has a lovely, relaxed vibe that’s perfect for a chilled lunch or dinner. The food is amazing—the wild garlic and Old Winchester flatbread was a total standout, really creative and fresh. It’s great to see a local spot so focused on seasonal, foraged ingredients. Definitely worth a visit!
