The Oystercatcher
Chorlton, Greater Manchester
In landlocked Chorlton, the scent of herb-buttered prawns and barbecued monkfish compels a loyal clientele to this seafood specialist. At busy times, the rather plain, single room spills onto a covered, heated front terrace (unfancy despite the fairy lights, but surprisingly convivial), while the kitchen explores international takes on the day's catch. To start, crisp crab arancini are paired with a rich roast tomato and harissa sauce, while salt-and-pepper squid lacks a little punch. Whole sea bream or black bass are simply grilled over coals; that smokiness also benefits a wedge of charred hispi cabbage served in a luxuriously toasty panang curry to go with sea bream and Jerusalem artichoke. Beautifully pearly cod gets a seasonal support system of wild garlic velouté and asparagus, and there are also generous platters to share – either of that tandoori BBQ monkfish with fennel gratin, or a pile-on of bream, tiger prawns, mussels and squid. Puddings, including an elegantly shallow, jammy raspberry crème brûlée, are worth staying put for – and if you're wondering where the menu is, scan the QR code on the table. Wines from £19.
