Portico Kitchen
Greater Manchester, Manchester - Café
Even if they have heard of the Grade II-listed Portico 'Library and Newsroom’, many Mancunians simply assume it is for members only. A dramatic glazed dome shelters a historic collection of 25,000 books and priceless archives, and as they proudly claim, it is also 'Manchester’s oldest lunch spot, serving since 1806'. Reached via a semi-hidden staircase, the quiet little tea room/café in the centre of the Library offers a good breakfast, such as poached eggs on Holy Grain sourdough, ahead of a well-sourced daytime menu of soup, amply filled sandwiches, toasties and cakes. There is usually a hot savoury such as sausage, leek and potato hash, too. The Portico also hosts food-related talks and events. Truly a hidden gem.
