Notes from the Guide’s Yorkshire inspectors

“We highly recommend Bantam, which opened in Helmsley in the summer. Chef and co-owner is Sam Varley, who has worked at the Kinneuchar Inn, Fife, also Duck Soup, Soho, and Naughty Piglets, Brixton. His sous chef is Shane Leadley, who comes via Noble Rot.

The Rattle Owl, York has worked hard during lockdown. Struggling for staff though. Had to ditch the à la carte because of a shortage of chefs so are doing the tasting menu at lunch and dinner. Tom Heywood, the chef, is doing lovely things.

Astonishing that acclaimed chef Frances Atkins from the Yorke Arms has rolled up cooking in a silver airstream caravan at Daleside Nurseries near Harrogate. Called Paradise Food, the team plans to build a permanent home there, but so far they look incredibly happy and relaxed. Believe Yorke Arms is now a wedding venue.

Ooh, and we love Craigs By the Sea, a café-bakery in Marske. Christopher Laing, a skilled pâtissier, has been wowing unsuspecting locals with kimchi, seeded sourdough and the best patisserie this side of Middlesborough. Innovative daytime dishes include a hearty breakfast skillet and monthly evening events are a hot ticket.”
