In an age when everyone can be an online restaurant critic, trust in the system becomes an important issue. Reader feedback has been the backbone of The Good Food Guide for seven decades. Our loyal readers tell us some of their favourite country pubs in the UK.
The Beehive, White Waltham, Berkshire
‘A lunch in the bar with a friend. My friend had the cheeseburger and I had two starters, rollmops and a scotch egg. A simple lunch but excellent quality. We have eaten in the restaurant twice before over the last years and cannot fault the cuisine.’

Prince of Wales Village Pub and Restaurant, Baslow, Derbyshire
‘Between six of us we tried all sorts of starters and mains. My sea bass on mash was delicious. The service was impeccable; the bar was really cosy and upstairs modern and clean. Staff and management were truly engaging and helpful. Absolutely loved it.’

The Wheatsheaf, Northleach, Gloucestershire
‘Fantastic devilled kidneys and roast pheasant. Great to see different options to the normal run of the mill menus found elsewhere. Good value and extensive wine list. A fabulous meal for my birthday celebration. Excellent breakfast the next morning as well!’

Bowley’s at the Plough, Trottiscliffe, Kent
‘We had such a lovely lunch here; the service was amazing, very attentive and knowledgeable. Very similar to going to a fine dining experience in a London restaurant, which was surprising within a local country village. The food was impeccable and wine choices were paired with such care. It was really a beautiful experience and we certainly will be going back.’

The Rose and Crown, Snettisham, Norfolk
‘Excellent food. Never forgets it’s a pub though and surprisingly busy on a Sunday night. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it, whether to drink, eat or stay. Redecorated, and new menu, since I last stayed two years ago, not that either needed doing. Constantly working to improve and refine, well done the owners.’

The Horse Guards Inn, Tillington, West Sussex
‘Neck end of pork and roast beef Sunday roasts; hoggett with olives and feta. All absolutely beautifully cooked. Superb service. Everyone here seems to enjoy working in the pub, locals popping in and out. We hadn’t been for nearly 2 years because of the issues, but it was possibly even better than we remembered.’

The West Arms Hotel, Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, Wales
‘All the food we had was fantastic, really good quality with a chef who clearly knows what they are doing. Lamb and beef from the local farms was delicious and the combinations of flavours and textures were really well balanced. The crab soufflé starter and Amaretti cheesecake were particular highlights.’
