The Miller of Mansfield, Goring, South East and overall winner The Good Food Guide Readers' Restaurant of the Year 2016

The Good Food Guide has announced the winners in its prestigious Readers’ Restaurant of the Year Awards 2016.

The results are in! Thanks to more than 18,000 nominations from The Good Food Guide’s readers, we are delighted to announce that the national winner of the Readers’ Restaurant of the Year Award is The Miller of Mansfield in Goring, Oxfordshire.

Owned by husband-and-wife team Mary and Nick Galer, the restaurant at the 18th-century coaching inn has been praised by readers for its ‘excellent service’ and ‘perfect ambience’, while The Good Food Guide’s undercover inspector found both ‘perfect produce and perfect cooking’, coupled with a genuine investment in the local community.

The Galers have previously worked at Heston Blumenthal’s The Crown and The Hinds Head, and have owned The Miller of Mansfield for just over a year. On winning the award, a delighted Mary Galer commented: ‘Our approach to dining is very straightforward. We serve traditional British food cooked with the best ingredients we can find, in a professional but friendly setting. Winning the award has been a huge morale boost for our staff, and it reflects all the hard work they’ve poured into the business since it started 15 months ago.’

Elizabeth Carter, The Good Food Guide’s editor, says: ‘The Miller of Mansfield not only offers great food and great value for money but also has a fantastic sense of community. Successful eateries sometimes get so popular they can lose their place in a community, but the Galers cherish their locals with special low-priced deals.

‘This award is a celebration of small, independent restaurants that specialise in amazing quality food, often at great-value prices. While trained inspectors carry out all our reviews, we rely on readers to let us know about eateries that might otherwise be overlooked. They are incredibly sophisticated when it comes to eating out, so it makes sense to listen to their opinions.’

The Readers’ Awards celebrate the best local restaurants in the country. To qualify for the awards, aimed at championing neighbourhood eateries, restaurants needed to be independently run and offer regional or local produce where possible. Ten regional winners were also announced, as follows:
