‘Please beware of thieves in the air,' implores Flotsam & Jetsam: tourists and lucky locals aren’t the only ones who covet everything that emerges from the frier at this phenomenally successful ‘seafood and frites’ joint. Just a bucket and spade’s throw from Viking Bay’s beautiful sandy beach, the takeout was born during the pandemic as a clever response to the challenges lockdown posed to the industry – it made our Platinum list of ‘best newcomers’ in 2021. Formerly a pop-up, it’s now a permanent fixture, delivering a creative line-up of fried seafood and frites (skin-on, hand-cut, and seriously impressive). This isn’t just elevated fish and chips: there’s fritto misto (a medley of crispy fried seafood and veg), delectable mussel and cockle popcorn, fish tacos, oysters battered or as they come, ray ribs in teriyaki sauce and so on. And for anyone craving an old-school carb-on-carb treat, a ‘Flotsam frites butty’ will be just the ticket. The only potential concern – bar protecting your purchases from aerial bombardment – is where to start with the panoply of sauces, from garlic aïoli to squid-ink hot sauce and truffle mayo: the happiest of predicaments, we think. Keep an eye on their social media for special offers such as a half-lobster and frites for £12.50. To drink? Cans of wine, cans of beer, cans of spirits and CanO Water. Open Thur–Sun (weather dependent, so check for details).
