Emily Scott Food
Cornwall, Newquay - Modern British - Restaurant - £££
*Following the closure of her restaurant at Watergate Bay, Emily Scott is planning to relocate as soon as possible. Watch this space.* With unrivalled year-round views over Watergate Bay, Emily Scott Food certainly draws the crowds. The space itself has been designed around the rugged Cornish seasons, a retractable glass roof and doors allowing diners to make the most of the terrace whatever the weather, while the interior exudes a sense of calm. It brings the outside in, incorporating a ceiling of suspended timber, polished concrete walls and preserved seaweed art, with coastal plants adorning the Nordic-style tables. The favoured device for cooking is the charcoal oven, which takes centre stage in the intimate open kitchen. Shell-baked scallops with seaweed butter and burnt lime, followed by stone bass grilled over coals with masala sauce or turbot roasted on the bone with miso beurre blanc, showcase the kitchen's simple and confident way with quality local fish. Shell-baked scallops with seaweed butter and burnt lime, followed by stone bass grilled over coals with masala sauce or turbot roasted on the bone with miso beurre blanc, showcase the kitchen's simple and confident way with quality local fish. For dessert, a take on the Cornish saffron bun (saffron soft serve, PX-soaked raisins, crystallised saffron bun) was greatly enjoyed, while the yuzu and strawberry tart with Cornish fairing crumb proved to be a triumph, perfectly offset by fragrant shiso leaves. Service, however, was 'a let down' at inspection, with long waits. The Cornish Wrecker cocktail served at the G7 summit in 2021 (where Emily Scott famously cooked for world leaders) is worth trying, and wines have been carefully chosen, with prices opening at £34.
