It's Cardiff's turn in the foodie spotlight. Here's a pick of some of the best restaurants and top foodie establishments in the Welsh capital, Caerdydd. And if you know of any other great places to eat, don't forget to let us know using our restaurant feedback form.
The Potted Pig
27 High Street
A darkly atmospheric former bank vault has been stripped back to its bare walls to create this chicly utilitarian restaurant. Expect meaty cooking, full flavours and a peppering of international influence in dishes such as heuvos rancheros and Italian sausage with fennel. Not persuaded? A ‘gin of the week’ cocktail takes pride of place on the menu.
The Wales Millennium Centre, Bute Place
A minimalist eatery with stunning views over Cardiff bay, ffresh caters for all tastes. Good value set menus show a proud Welsh provenance and are a cut above the usual brasserie fare: choose sea bass with parmentière potato and kohlrabi, followed by chocolate parfait with nectarine purée for a comfortable £15.50. For casual diners, there’s an extensive bar menu of sharing platters, burgers and pizzas: we’ve got our eye on the smoked salmon, Welsh cheddar and horseradish topped creation.
5 Romilly Crescent
A gem of a family-run restaurant, Bully’s has been going strong for over 15 years. Its homespun interior is crammed with everything from gilt-framed mirrors to menus gathered on the owners’ gastronomic travels. Their international adventures shine through in a broadly French menu with some exotic twists: foie gras with saké dressing, for example, or yellowfin tuna with Madagascan peppercorn sauce. A lunch tasting menu, with five courses for a mere £21, has to be the order of the day.
