The range of cuisines on offer in the capital is dazzling and your nominations led us all over town. We discovered Giulia (the perfect neighbourhood Italian in Shepherd's Bush), were introduced to some terrific Palestinian cooking at Akub in Notting Hill, and enjoyed a trip to Kew, where we ate very well at Hawthorn. What was so heartening was that these restaurants offered a taste of what everybody craves – good, honest food at an affordable price. But for us, and for of its loyal fans, the standout is the brilliant Les 2 Garçons in Crouch End and its classic, supremely delicious French food – it is a deserving regional winner. With such a huge amount of talent and choice in London, it’s always good to have that comforting thought that someone with professional know-how has looked and liked what they’ve seen.

‘Robert and JC are masters of their art’; ‘the best local hosts’: just two of the many hundreds of nominations for this runaway winner of London’s Best Local Restaurant. Indeed, these two garçons are veterans of Gallic food and hospitality, and our inspection found their authentic bistro to be as good as the best you’d hope to discover in France. Locals rightly appreciate the fact that they have a perfect gem on their doorstep, so it’s no surprise that bagging a table can prove tricky. But once you do, it will feel like ‘being at a dinner party with your best friends,’ according to one fan, who also admits to dreaming of the pear tarte tatin.
