*Welsh-born Gwennan Davies (the Tom Kerridge group et al) has replaced Nick Evans as the Griffin's head chef. Watch for a new review coming soon.*

Whether you're stopping for a pint of Butty Bach with the locals at the bar, coming blustered and windblown from a hike, or among a gathering of friends and family for a celebration, the welcome at this old stone inn is as warm and easy as can be. There's no doubt the space has undergone huge renovations over the years, but much care has been taken to maintain a warm, laid-back atmosphere. The kitchen uses the best produce available, much of it local, and offers a short, daily, please-all menu. Vegetarians and vegans will be as happy with the full-flavoured houmous matched with sweetly pickled beetroot and dill, as meat eaters are with the beautifully crisped, gorgeously tender lamb breast served with fresh garlic and kofta. Classic greedy desserts (rice pudding, dark chocolate délice) and excellent cheeses follow. Local brews are chalked up on the beams around the bar, but the drinks list is worth a look: spirits from local distilleries, an impressive choice of non-alcoholic alternatives, and mainly British and European wines (many by the glass and carafe) are well curated, imaginatively categorised and not too pricey – though there's plenty of scope for celebrations, if that’s in order.
