Duck Duck Goose chef-founder Oli Brown and partner Ruth Leigh – daughter of the esteemed Rowley – are opening a country restaurant with rooms this July, just outside the coastal town of Deal in Kent.
Stephen and Phil Harris opened The Sportsman in November 1999 and the old white-painted pub made its first appearance in the Guide in 2002. It has long been one of the top dining destinations in the country, a remarkable achievement considering its refusal to conform to the dictates of fine dining – quite a shock to some in the mid-noughties. As the following excerpts show, Stephen Harris’s vision - delightfully simple, obsessively influenced by the raw materials available on the doorstep – has truly stood the test of time.
