Aiden Byrne leaves Manchester House for new city opening

Aiden Byrne, who recently left Manchester House, has been appointed chef director of the soon-to-open new D&D restaurant 20 Stories. Opening in February 2018, 20 Stories will occupy the 19th floor rooftop of the No.1 Spinningfields building and will feature a restaurant, grill, bar and terrace with 360-degree views of Manchester’s city skyline.The menu at 20 Stories will be Modern British, celebrating local produce with suppliers sourced, where possible, from no more than 50 miles from the city.

Shaun Rankin cuts ties with Ormer, Jersey

Shaun Rankin has left Ormer in St Helier, four years after he launched the Jersey restaurant as chef-proprietor. The restaurant will remain open with the existing team and the kitchen is now under the leadership of Lee Smith, who has been the head chef since it opened in 2013. In a brief statement, the owners said: ‘It is time to move forward with a refocused vision for Ormer and Shaun Rankin does not form part of our plans for the future. We will be concentrating on enhancing our presence in Jersey and selectively adding to our restaurants in the UK, starting with an exciting new venture in Liverpool.’ Rankin will continue to work at the Jersey hotel’s sibling, Flemings Mayfair, where Rankin runs Ormer Mayfair.

Elliot’s Café chef to open new London restaurant

Chef at Elliot’s Café in Borough is launching a new restaurant in London early next year. Brett Redman will launch Neptune at the Principal London hotel on Bloomsbury’s Russell Square, which will also include a coffee house and cocktail bar. The Australian chef previously worked at The Richmond in Dalston and Japanese yakitori restaurant Jidori in Hackney.

Ex-Fat Duck chef Mary-Ellen McTague reveals plans for new Manchester launch

Mary-Ellen McTague, who was a sous chef at The Fat Duck before running Manchester restaurant Aumbry for five years until it closed in 2014, has launched a crowdfunding campaign to open her next venture. Due to open in March 2018 in a former Edwardian creamery, The Creameries in Manchester’s Chorlton district will serve food all day and include an open bakery. Sunday sharing menus will include meat roasted overnight and ‘baker’s’ potatoes.

Powys pub The Checkers goes on the market after six years

The Checkers in Montgomery is up for sale, six years after it was opened by Stéphane Borie and Sarah Francis, who both trained with Michel Roux at the Waterside Inn in Bray. During their time at The Checkers, the couple completely refurbished the pub and launched five bedrooms. The team’s future plans are yet to be announced. Borie recently published his debut recipe book, The Frenchman and the Farmer’s Daughters. checkerswales.co.uk

Santo Remedio relaunches following successful Kickstarter campaign

The founders of modern Mexican restaurant Santo Remedio, whose previous Shoreditch restaurant was a hit with critics and diners alike, have reopened in Bermondsey following a successful Kickstarter campaign. The Tooley Street restaurant has launched with a new menu including dishes like Barbacoa-style lamb cutlets with guajillo salsa, and Mexican pork broth with hominy, pork belly and radishes. The new upstairs bar will be serving Mexican and local beers with a selection of tacos and snacks.santoremedio.co.uk
